IIOJK jails severely overcrowded, house 5,383 inmates against capacity of 3,629
Jammu: Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s prisons are operating at 148% occupancy, with 5,383 inmates lodged against a sanctioned capacity of 3,629 as of December 31, 2024, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Rajya Sabha.
According to Kashmir Media Service, overcrowding in IIOJk jails has steadily increased from 4,105 inmates in 2020 to 5,383 in 2024, while capacity remained almost unchanged.
In India, 609 prisons were functioning beyond capacity with an overall occupancy rate of 113%.
The Ministry said prison administration is the responsibility of states and UTs.
