India: NASAR students oppose CJI Surya Kant as convocation chief guest
Hyderabad, August 10 (KMS): Graduates of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NASAR) in the Indian city of Hyderabad have demanded that the university administration reconsider its proposal to invite Chief Justice Surya Kant as the chief guest at the upcoming convocation.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Indian media reports have said that in the petition submitted to the Vice Chancellor, Registrar and teachers, the students have said that the importance of principles like constitutional rights, justice and taking civil grievances seriously should be kept in mind even in the convocation.
It should be noted that the Indian students objected to the Supreme Court not scheduling the petition regarding the police action during the protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20 for urgent hearing.
The students have cited reports in their petition according to which, when the matter was presented for urgent hearing on July 22, the Chief Justice had told the lawyer not to waste our time and his.
According to the petition, when the lawyer offered to show videos of alleged police abuses, the Chief Justice had said that he was not interested in watching the videos, he did not have time.
The students say that the lawyer was not given a chance to complete the speech to explain the reasons for the protest. The students have written in the petition that a separate letter had already been sent to the Chief Justice, demanding that the Supreme Court take suo motu notice of the police action.
The petition states that more than 170 protesters, including women and children, were injured in the police action. The students in their petition to the university administration have said that during their studies at the National Law University, we were taught the importance of constitutional values and civil rights, so it is a matter of concern to receive degrees from a person whose recent behavior seems to ignore the protesters’ position regarding serious allegations of police violence.
The students have demanded that the university administration seriously reconsider the decision to make the Chief Justice the special guest and consult with the graduating students in this regard.
