Muslims under siege in India, facing big challenge to their identity: Author
Chennai: The celebrated author ,Ziyaul Salam, has highlighted the daily escalating threats against Muslims and attacks on mere suspicion or appearance.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a passionate address at a community center in Perumbur during the launch of his acclaimed book, “Being Muslim in Hindu India,” he shed light on the alarming atrocities faced by Muslims across India.
Salam minced no words, declaring that Muslims are under siege in India, and are facing an unprecedented challenge to their identity.
The author lamented the erosion of secular values in India, emphasizing that the very idea of existence for Muslims is at stake.
Salam condemned anti-Muslim hate crimes, citing attacks on attire, language, and culture. He also criticized the political marginalization of Muslims, from denial of electoral representation to missing names on rolls, signaling a systematic attempt to erase their historical presence.
The author specifically praised the resilience of Muslim women during the 2020 Shaheen Bagh protest in Delhi, holding Qur’an in one hand and the Constitution in the other, braving harsh weather and hostile media to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
During a Q&A session, Salam proposed a strategic use of social media and meaningful engagement with civil society to rally support against the injustices faced by Muslims in India. As he urged for unity, the author called upon the Muslim community to organize and shape public opinion against the ongoing challenges.
