Delhi court reserves order on NewsClick HR head’s bail plea in UAPA Case
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has reserved its verdict on the bail application of NewsClick’s Human Resources head, Amit Chakravarty, in a case filed under the black law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The media outlet is accused of receiving funds to disseminate pro-China content. Chakravarty was granted permission by Delhi’s Patiala House Court on January 9 to become an approver in the ongoing case.
The trial court extended the judicial custody of both NewsClick founder-editor, Prabir Purkayastha, and Chakravarty until February 17.
Following the Delhi Police’s application for a 60-day extension on December 22 last year, the court granted an extension for investigation, citing the voluminous evidence and the necessity to visit various locations outside Delhi, contributing to anticipated delays.
The Special Cell initiated an FIR on August 17, 2023, under various sections of the UAPA and the Indian Penal Code against NewsClick.
However, observers are of the view that the media outlet, known for its investigative journalism, is being victimized for its criticism of the Modi government policies and actions. In this context, the allegations leveled against NewsClick, accusing it of spreading pro-China propaganda, raise suspicions of political motives behind the legal proceedings.
Despite Chakravarty’s cooperation with the investigation, the prolonged custody and absence of a charge sheet raise concerns about the fairness of the judicial process. The trial court’s extension of judicial custody for both Chakravarty and NewsClick’s founder-editor, Prabir Purkayastha, until February 17, further amplifies these concerns.
