Indian labourer dies in Ramban landslide

Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only surface link connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the world, remained closed after fresh landslide in Ramban district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, hundreds of vehicles, primarily trucks, became stranded at various points along the highway, which was closed on Monday. While traffic was partially restored on Wednesday afternoon, it was subsequently closed again. Authorities indicated that no fresh traffic could be allowed for three days.

Traffic authorities said that fresh landslides at Kishtwari Pathar and due to the tumbling of stones at Mehar-Cafeteria, Rampari, Gangroo and Seeri areas between Ramban and Banihal, the highway remained blocked.

“Restoration work is in progress at Kishtwari Pather on Srinagar-Jammu highway, it will take some time,” traffic police said, adding, “People are advised to avoid journey on the highway till the road is clear”.

Meanwhile, a labourer from Uttar Pradesh died after coming under a massive landslide in Seeri area of Ramban district along the highway on Thursday. The deceased labourer identified as Desh Pal, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was reportedly working with a private construction company.
