4 years & counting: Activist Umar Khalid’s bail plea rejected by Delhi court
New Delhi: A court in Delhi today rejected the bail application of former Jawaharlal Nehru University scholar and activist, Umar Khalid who was arrested in September 2020 under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Courts dismissed Umar Khalid’s plea who was arrested in a case relating to the North-East Delhi anti-Muslim violence in February, 2020.
The Delhi Police had opposed the bail for Khalid, alleging that he messaged actors and politicians to amplify his narrative.
Khalid’s lawyer had told the court that the other accused in the case were already out on bail, including some against whom the allegations are more serious.
His bail hearing in the Indian Supreme Court was delayed for the 14 times during his four-year-long incarceration. On February 14, 2024, Khalid’s lawyer, Kapil Sibbal, withdrew the petition from the top court to “try their luck in a lower court”.
