IIOJK: Mirwaiz placed under house arrest, barred from offering Eid prayers
Disallowing of Eid prayers at Jamia Masjid & Eidgah in Srinagar condemned
Srinagar: The authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir today placed senior APHC leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest in Srinagar and barred him from offering Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in the city.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid in a statement in Srinagar said that after Fajr prayers today, Indian police personnel closed the gates of Jamia Masjid in Srinagar and informed the Auqaf that Eid prayers would not be permitted at the mosque.
The Anjuman Auqaf added that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was also placed under house arrest.
Meanwhile, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement issued from his residence in Srinagar where he is currently under detention, strongly condemned the authorities’ decision to disallow Eid prayers at Jamia Masjid and Eidgah in Srinagar.
He stated that this action represents a disturbing infringement on the religious freedoms and rights of Kashmiri Muslims, and that the consistent denial of congregational prayers is not only deeply disrespectful but also exacerbates the sense of alienation and grievance among the people. He added that this incident highlights the ongoing restrictions and contradicts the authorities’ claims of normalcy in Kashmir.
