Nepal halts sales of Indian-made antibiotic over health risks

Kathmandu: The drug regulatory authority in Nepal has suspended the sales and distribution of an antibiotic injection manufactured by an Indian firm, citing serious health risks.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Nepal’ s Department of Drug Administration (DDA) suspended the Biotax 1gm, manufactured by Zydus Healthcare Ltd in India since it was not in compliance with the production specifications, posing a danger to patients’ lives, The Kathmandu Post reported.

Biotax 1gm is used to treat various bacterial infections and prevent surgical infections.
However, laboratory tests revealed that the drug does not meet the required standards, prompting the department to take action.

The department has directed the manufacturing company, importers, and distributors to immediately suspend sales, import, and distribution of the medicine until further notice.

“Some serious issues have been detected in the said antibiotic. Decisions about further actions will be taken once the investigation is completed,” Pramod KC, spokesperson at the department was quoted as saying by The Kathmandu Post.

Notably, this is not the first time that Indian drugs have been banned by other countries due to quality and health concerns.
