Baramulla residents protest against IIOJK authorities’ apathy

Srinagar: In a stark display of authorities’ apathy, the Azad Gunj-Drangbal road in Baramulla, Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), has been left in a deplorable state, prompting locals to take to the streets in protest.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the 4-kilometer stretch, which connects the old town, has deteriorated into a potholed and dusty track, making commuting a daunting task for residents, shopkeepers, and transporters. The absence of proper lighting has further compounded the problem, rendering night travel perilous.

The protesters, comprising a diverse group of citizens, shopkeepers, and transporters, expressed their frustration, stating, “We have been forced to protest because our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.” They emphasized that the dilapidated road has severely impacted their livelihoods, with businesses suffering due to the authorities’ inaction.

The demonstrators demanded immediate macadamization of the road, proper lighting, and a ban on heavy vehicles during daytime. They also highlighted the issue of poor sanitation, contradicting the Municipal Committee’s claims of effective waste management.

The IIOJK authorities’ apathy has been evident in their failure to allocate funds for the road’s maintenance and repair, leaving locals to suffer. The neglect has severely impacted the health and livelihoods of the people, who are now demanding urgent action.
