India intensifies restrictions in IIOJK on anniversary of Article 370 revocation

Srinagar: In a move that violates the UN mandate on the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Indian authorities have intensified restrictions in the name of heightened security measures on the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the move is aimed at preventing people from holding rallies, protest demonstrations and seminars against the India’s illegal act taken on August 5, 2019. Increased military presence and checkpoints along the Jammu-Srinagar highway are a stark reminder of India’s ongoing occupation and disregard for international law.

The UN has designated Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory, and any actions taken by India to alter its status are in clear violation of UN resolutions. The abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the territory, was widely condemned by the international community and has led to a significant escalation of human rights abuses and repression.

The Indian government’s decision to hold rallies and events to celebrate the anniversary of this move is a provocative act that further inflames tensions in the South Asian region.

The ‘Ekatma Mahotsav Rally’ organized by the BJP in RS Pura on August 5 is a clear example of India’s attempts to normalize its occupation and suppress the rights of the Kashmiri people.

On the occasion, Hurriyat leaders in their statements in Srinagar urged the international community to condemn India’s actions and hold it accountable for its violations of international law. The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve the right to self-determination and freedom from occupation, and any attempts to suppress their rights will only lead to further instability and conflict in the region.
