Kashmiri scientist leads creation of world’s first AI-driven oral cancer database

New Delhi: In a landmark achievement in medical research, a Kashmiri scientist at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in Delhi has led the creation of the world’s first AI-driven oral cancer database, marking a significant advance in the battle against this challenging disease.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the groundbreaking project, developed by JMI’s Multidisciplinary Centre for Advanced Research and Studies (MCARS), was spearheaded by PhD scholar Nisha Chaudhary under the expert guidance of Dr. Tanveer Ahmad, a renowned Kashmiri scientist. This innovative dataset, which will soon be published in the prestigious Scientific Data journal by the Nature Publishing Group, aims to revolutionize the diagnosis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

The dataset, compiled from leading Indian medical institutions, is set to transform early oral cancer diagnosis by enhancing speed and accessibility, particularly in underserved regions.

Dr. Tanveer Ahmad, the senior author of the study, emphasized the global impact of this pioneering work, which is protected by two patents. “This is the first comprehensive database of its kind in the world. The response from the international research community has been extraordinary, with numerous researchers expressing interest in using our database and AI tool for advancing their own studies in digital pathology.”

Senior author Akhilanand Chaurasia, an expert in Oral Medicine and Radiology, lauded the development’s potential to significantly improve patient outcomes.
