Farooq Abdullah criticizes Modi govt’s peace claims amid heavy military presence in IIOJK

Srinagar: Farooq Abdullah, President of the National Conference, has sharply criticized the Modi government’s claims of restoring peace and order in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting that the huge military presence on the streets of the territory undermines these assertions.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a media interview, Farooq Abdullah questioned the legitimacy of New Delhi’s peace claims, stating, “If there is peace, why are there so many armed forces personnel on the roads? Look at how heavily armed they are — does this signify peace?” He reiterated his demand for the immediate restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

He also took aim at the Lieutenant Governor of IIOJK, Manoj Sinha, referring to him as a viceroy of Delhi. He questioned the necessity of being under Delhi’s direct control, stating, “Why should we be under Delhi’s viceroy? He can issue any orders and make any changes.”

The 88-year-old NC leader also condemned the Indian government’s decision to abrogate Article 370, which the BJP had justified by claiming it was the root cause of ‘terrorism’ in the territory. He noted that despite the abrogation occurring five years ago, peace and order have yet to be fully restored.

Additionally, Farooq Abdullah said that the BJP was attempting to create divisions among people along communal lines.
