India fuels arms race in South Asia with Rs 26,000-crore Sukhoi engine deal

New Delhi:In a move that is likely to escalate the arms race in the South Asian region, Indian Defence Ministry has signed a massive Rs 26,000-crore deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the production of 240 aero-engines for Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft.

According to Kashmir Media Service, this deal is seen as a significant upgrade to India’s military capabilities, but it also raises concerns about the regional security dynamics.

The deal comes at a time when tensions between India and its neighbors, particularly Pakistan and China, are running high. The Indian military has been rapidly modernizing its capabilities, and this deal is seen as a part of that effort. However, it also raises concerns about the potential for an arms race in the region, which could lead to increased tensions and instability.

The HAL will produce the engines at its Koraput plant in Odisha, with a delivery schedule of 30 AL-31FP aero-engines annually. The supply of all 240 engines is expected to be completed in the next eight years. This deal is likely to give India a significant edge in terms of military capabilities, but it also raises questions about the potential consequences for regional security.

Experts warn that this deal could lead to a renewed arms race in the region, with other countries feeling pressure to upgrade their own military capabilities. This could lead to increased tensions and instability, and could potentially even lead to conflict.
