CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury passes away in New Delhi
New Delhi: General Secretary of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Sitaram Yechury passed away today at the age of 72, after battling a respiratory illness.
According to Kashmir Media Service, he had been receiving treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS in Delhi since August 19, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a pneumonia-like infection.
Sitaram Yechury, a stalwart of Indian leftist politics, had a long career, serving as a member of the CPI-M’s politburo for over three decades and as a Rajya Sabha member from 2005 to 2017.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College and Jawaharlal Nehru University, he began his political journey with the Students’ Federation of India, joining the CPI-M in 1975.
