Kashmiri bird researcher secures fully funded PhD scholarship in Australia

Srinagar: Parvaiz Yousuf from Pampore, Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, has become the first Kashmiri to receive a fully funded PhD scholarship in Ecology and Evolution at James Cook University in Australia.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a resident of Chatlam Larpora, Pampore, Parvaiz recently completed his integrated BSc-MSc in Zoology from the Central University of Kashmir in 2022. He has been awarded the James Cook University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (JCUPRS), covering full tuition, providing a generous stipend, and including overseas health coverage.

Parvaiz’s interest in ornithology was nurtured by his proximity to the Chatlam Wetland Reserve, where migratory birds sparked his passion for avian life. This passion led him to author Birds of Jammu and Kashmir Including Ladakh, the first comprehensive documentation of the region’s bird species.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Parvaiz served as Director of the Wetland Research Centre for Wildlife Conservation Fund (WCF), where he concentrated on studying migratory birds in wetlands. His dedication to wildlife conservation and avian research has made him a key advocate for ecotourism and environmental protection in Kashmir.

Parvaiz’s achievement highlights the potential of Kashmiri youth in global academic spheres, serving as an inspiration for students across the region to follow their passions with commitment and perseverance.
