First-year MBBS student dies after ragging in India’s Gujarat

New Delhi: An 18-year-old first-year MBBS student at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Patan, Gujarat, died after being forced to stand for three hours during a ragging incident at the college hostel, officials said.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the victim, Anil Methaniya, reportedly fell unconscious after the ordeal and was rushed to the hospital. Despite attempts to revive him, he was declared dead, according to Dr. Hardik Shah, the college dean.

An anti-ragging committee has launched an investigation, and the college administration has promised strict action against those responsible if ragging is confirmed.

A police official from Balisana stated that a case of accidental death has been registered, and the student’s body has been sent for postmortem. Witnesses claim a group of senior students forced first-year students to stand for hours and introduce themselves one by one.

The incident has sparked outrage, raising concerns over the enforcement of anti-ragging measures in educational institutions.
