India obsessed with Pannun’s boycott call of R-Day celebrations in Punjab

Chandigarh: India’s obsession with Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and the rising demand for Khalistan was once again evident as the Indian state escalated its security measures across Punjab, showcasing its fear and unease over the exiled Sikh leader’s call to boycott Republic Day celebrations in the state.

According to Kashmir Media Service, pro-Khalistan graffiti paired with boycott calls at multiple locations, including a flyover in Faridkot, triggered panic among Indian authorities. The Punjab Police quickly painted over the slogans and intensified security arrangements, revealing the state’s apprehension about the movement’s growing resonance among the Sikh diaspora and its ideological roots in Punjab.

Emails allegedly sent by the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group to schools in Patiala, urging them to refrain from Republic Day activities, added to the authorities’ alarm. Indian officials dismissed the emails as a “ploy” by Pannun to disturb law and order, but their actions reflect the state’s inability to address the historical grievances that continue to fuel the Khalistan movement.

In Amritsar, a massive deployment of 2,500 police personnel was made following Pannun’s call to hoist Khalistan flags at government buildings. Additionally, the venue for Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s Republic Day event was shifted from Faridkot to Patiala after graffiti promoting Khalistan appeared in Faridkot’s stadium.

Rather than addressing the legitimate demands of the Sikh community, India has resorted to labeling Pannun as a “fugitive hiding abroad like a scared mouse.” Patiala DIG Mandeep Singh Sidhu accused Pannun of misleading youth with promises of immigration and financial gains, a claim reflecting the state’s growing anxiety over his influence.

Political analysts argue that India’s fixation on suppressing pro-Khalistan voices through arrests, crackdowns, and propaganda, rather than engaging in meaningful dialogue, highlights its failure to address deep-seated issues. The Khalistan movement continues to challenge India’s democratic claims, with the state’s actions only bolstering the legitimacy of the calls for justice and self-determination led by Pannun and his supporters.
