BJP-ruled Gujarat: A hotbed of systemic anti-Muslim violence and discrimination
Islamabad: Gujarat, governed by the BJP, has increasingly become a symbol of systemic anti-Muslim violence, exemplifying the broader patterns of discrimination seen across India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the state has fostered an environment where violence against Muslims is not only condoned but actively incited by BJP politicians, leading to mob attacks and lynchings. The situation has resulted in the widespread marginalization of Muslims, who now face a severe erosion of their basic rights. Legal recourse is nearly impossible, as many lawyers refuse to represent Muslim clients, and extremist Hindu groups instill a pervasive sense of fear and insecurity.
Since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the frequency of lynchings has escalated, fueled by politically motivated Hindu groups using violence to further their agenda. The infamous 2002 Gujarat riots, which saw over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, killed under the leadership of then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi, continue to cast a dark shadow over the state. The riots sowed sectarian divisions, solidifying BJP power. Today, Muslims are confined to ghettos, isolated, and trapped in deteriorating socio-economic conditions.
The BJP, alongside its media allies, propagates a narrative portraying Muslims as a national threat, justifying discriminatory policies and escalating polarization. Under Modi’s leadership, communal tensions have deepened, turning India into a battleground of religious identity.
Muslims face systemic exclusion from political spaces, limiting their ability to oppose discriminatory policies. International human rights organizations have raised alarms over the ongoing persecution in Gujarat, a grim reflection of the broader targeting of minorities under the BJP regime.
Adding to Gujarat’s woes is a demographic strain caused by an influx of 4.62 million migrants (2011 Census), driven by inadequate local employment opportunities. Despite government claims of economic growth, promises of infrastructure development remain unmet, straining resources and deepening socio-economic challenges.
At the heart of this unraveling lies Hindutva, the RSS-backed ideology championed by the BJP, which promotes Hindu nationalism and marginalizes minorities. Modi’s tenure has brought global scrutiny to India’s escalating communal violence and its eroding democratic fabric.
As international condemnation mounts, the world watches with growing alarm at the BJP’s divisive politics, the persecution of minorities, and the increasing threat to India’s secular and democratic foundations.
