Wani urges UN Special Rapporteur for immediate action on grave HR violations in IIOJK
Islamabad: Altaf Hussain Wani, Chairman of the Kashmir Institute of International Relations based in Islamabaed, has written a letter to the United Nations Special Rapporteur, urging him to take immediate notice of the escalating incidents of torture and custodial killings by Indian troops in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Altaf Wani in his letter to UN Special Rapporteur on Arbitrary Executions, Morris Tidball Binz emphasized that the continued and systematic use of custodial torture by Indian occupying forces in IIOJK constitutes a grave violation of fundamental human rights and international law. He described custodial torture as a form of oppression, which is often used to extract forced confessions, intimidate individuals, and suppress dissent. He further stated that such actions violate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as international conventions.
While referring to the recent killing of a Kashmiri youth, Makhan Din, from the Kathua district, who was brutally tortured to death by the Indian police while in custody, Wani noted that Indian forces, operating under the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), are granted unchecked powers, impunity and with no accountability for the killing of innocent civilians.
Altaf Wani urged the UN Special Rapporteur to hold India accountable for these grave violations of human rights and crimes against humanity in the occupied territory. He called on the international community to ensure that India faces consequences for the atrocities committed against the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
