Rise in atrocities against Dalit women in India highlighted

New Delhi: Secretary to Government Kaki Sunita has expressed concern over the rising number of atrocities against Dalit women.

According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking at the annual State conference of Dalit Sthree Sakthi (DSS) on the theme ‘Violence on Dalit, Adivasi Women’, she highlighted the dismal conviction rate in sexual assault cases.

Citing the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, she, however, said that the condition of women in Telugu-speaking states was better than that of women in north Indian states. She complimented the efforts of the DSS in fighting atrocities against Dalit and adivasi women.

Convener of DSS Geddam Jhansi elaborated on the programmes undertaken by the organisation to uplift Dalit and Adivasi women and girls.

Saraswati Iyer, a professor at Acharya Nagarjuna University, said violence against women often led to disturbing consequences, including psychological and physical issues. She said three in every five persons facing such trauma suffered from psychological problems.
