Protester killed , 40 others injured as clashes erupt in volatile Manipur
New Delhi: One person was killed and 40 others, including women, injured as clashes erupted between protesters and Indian forces in Manipur, India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the violence broke out on Saturday as New Delhi enforced restriction on free movement on roads and highways, a move strongly opposed by Christian Kuki groups demanding a separate territory.
Indian troops fired tear gas and resorted to lathicharge as demonstrators blocked roads in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts, chanting “Meitei go back!” and halting state transport buses.
The Kuki-Zo Council called for an indefinite shutdown in tribal areas, rejecting the New Delhi’s restrictions.
Tensions escalated in Kangpokpi when a mob attacked a Manipur State Transport bus. In Senapati’s Keithenmanbi village, security personnel opened fire, killing one protester.
With heavy deployment, including Assam Rifles escorting buses, officials remain on high alert to prevent further unrest.
