Yasin Malik’s execution will shatter the last hope for peace in South Asia: Mushaal Malik

Islamabad: Mushaal Hussein Malik, wife of jailed Kashmiri resistance leader Muhammad Yasin Malik and Chairperson of the Peace and Culture Organization, has warned that her husband’s execution would extinguish the last remaining hope for peace in South Asia and plunge the region into peril.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a statement in Islamabad, Mushaal Malik said that branding Yasin Malik—a leader who gave up arms and chose the path of dialogue—as a terrorist is tantamount to burying the peace process. She said the Modi-led Indian government is exploiting the case for electoral gains by accelerating the execution proceedings against Yasin Malik ahead of elections.

“Seven successive Indian Prime Ministers, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, trusted him for peace-building. To now brand him a terrorist and hang him is hypocrisy that threatens to bury reconciliation,” she remarked.

Mushaal further said that Modi’s revocation of Articles 370 and 35A has already inflamed tensions in the region, and Yasin Malik’s execution would push the subcontinent “dangerously close to catastrophe”. “The timing of this hearing is no coincidence, it coincides with elections. History shows that war hysteria or accelerated hanging proceedings are used for political gain. This misuse of courts risks dragging Pakistan and India back to the brink of war.”

“This is not just about Yasin—it is about peace and humanity,” she stressed. “His execution will kill the last hope for peace in South Asia. Calling a leader who renounced violence and embraced dialogue a terrorist is a great betrayal of history”.

Highlighting the human cost, Mushaal spoke of their 13-year-old daughter Raziyah Sultana, who has not seen her father for 11 years. “She sleeps with his photo under her pillow, and writes letters to her father she cannot send,” Mushaal said.

Mushaal Malik appealed to the international community, world leaders and human rights organizaitons to intervene urgently to stop Yasin Malik’s execution and play their role in safeguarding peace in the region.
