Mehbooba slams New Delhi, says BJP indulging in ‘empty symbolism’

Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti has criticised the BJP-led Indian government for its obsession with “empty symbolism” at a time when people across India are facing pressing crises, including the severe disruption in IndiGo airline operations.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to initiate a debate in the Lok Sabha on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, a move the government says will highlight several historical aspects of the national song.

In a post on X, Mehbooba wrote, “Parliament is busy sparring over a two-hundred-year-old Vande Mataram even as IndiGo passengers are left stranded and desperate for answers. Instead of confronting the crises hurting people right now, BJP seems intent on indulging in empty symbolism.”

She was referring to the cancellation of hundreds of IndiGo flights since December 2 following regulatory changes related to pilots’ duty time and rest norms, which have left lakhs of passengers stranded across airports in India.

“How will this political theatre create jobs, control soaring prices or address the real urgent problems weighing on millions of Indians?” Mehbooba asked.
