Partisan conduct: Congress-led Opposition submits no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker

New Delhi: Indian Opposition parties, led by the Congress, have submitted a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for acting in a partisan manner and denying Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi the opportunity to speak.

According to Kashmir Media Service,Suresh and party Whip Mohammed Jawed Ahmed handed over the notice to Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh.

The resolution seeking removal of Birla as the Lok Sabha Speaker carries 119 signatures, including T.R. Baalu of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Dimple Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP).

The Congress said that the Speaker deliberately denied Rahul Gandhi his right to speak during the debate on the Motions of Thanks to the President’s address. The notice also criticized Birla’s recent suspension of eight Opposition MPs for sloganeering, seven of whom belonged to Congress.

The notice further objected to the Speaker’s remarks in the House that he had “concrete information” suggesting that some Congress members might move toward Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat and carry out “some unexpected act.” Congress described this as an abuse of the constitutional office of the Speaker.

Separately, eight women Congress MPs wrote to the Speaker on Monday, saying they were being targeted simply because they had “consistently fought against PM Modi’s anti-people government and demanded accountability from him.”
