France refuses Rafale source code transfer to India

Islamabad: Despite purchasing dozens of Rafale fighter jets from France, the Indian Air Force has not obtained full operational autonomy over the aircraft’s core systems.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a report by the French business outlet, L’Essentiel de l’Éco, said that the French government has ruled out transferring the critical source codes linked to the advanced SPECTRA electronic warfare suite and other core avionics. These highly sophisticated digital systems control key functions of the aircraft, including sensors, electronic defence, radar operations, and mission management.

French authorities reportedly consider this software architecture highly sensitive and closely guarded technology developed over many years.

With restricted access to the source code, India’s ability to independently modify the aircraft’s internal software in the future could be limited. Integration of certain sensors or weapons may require coordination with the original manufacturer.

Indian media outlets have characterized the development as acquiring Rafale jets “without brain,” indicating that New Delhi will remain reliant on French technical support for future upgrades, modifications, and performance enhancements.

India is preparing to acquire 114 Dassault Aviation-built Rafale jets as part of a major defence modernization plan for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The proposal has already received approval from India’s Defence Acquisition Council, and negotiations between New Delhi and Paris are currently underway.
