Muslim vendor abused, threatened over religion in BJP-ruled Uttarakhand

Dehradun: Muslims in Modi’s India continue to face intimidation, harassment, and threats, with small traders and vendors often targeted by Hindutva activists. One such case recently surfaced in BJP-ruled Uttarakhand state where a 40-year-old Muslim street vendor was verbally abused and threatened after revealing his religion while selling goods in an area in Haridwar.
.According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred in the Kankhal township. The vendor, Shan Mohammad—locally known as Shanu—said he was confronted while selling household goods door-to-door in Kankhal.
Recounting the incident, Shan Mohammad said a man approached him and asked his name. “I told him my name is Shanu,” he said. “He then asked if I was a Muslim. When I replied that I am Muslim, he began abusing me, used foul language, and told me to leave the village.”
He further said that the man warned him not to return and threatened serious consequences if he did.
The vendor, who has been earning his livelihood by selling goods door-to-door for several years, said the incident left him shaken. “I am a poor man trying to feed my family. What happened has disturbed me mentally. I am afraid something worse may happen,” he said.
The incident comes amid rising reports of communal tension in parts of Uttarakhand. Recently, in Rudrapur in Udham Singh Nagar district, a video surfaced showing an attack on a Muslim offering namaz, sparking public concern.
Local community members in Haridwar said such incidents create fear among small traders who depend on daily earnings. “Street vendors rely on their daily income. If they are targeted because of their religion, it affects both their livelihood and sense of security,” a local resident said. Another added, “Differences should not lead to threats. The administration must act firmly to ensure such behaviour is not repeated.”
For Shan Mohammad, however, the immediate concern is personal safety. “I have worked hard all my life. I just want to work without fear,” he said.
