Severe irrigation crisis grips Pulwama farmers amid neglect by IIOJK authorities
Srinagar: Farmers in Pulwama district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir are facing a severe irrigation crisis due to an extended dry spell this summer and compounded by negligence from occupation authorities, severely impacting agricultural activities in the district.
According to Kashmir Media Service, residents of Koil village in the district expressed grave concern over the acute shortage of irrigation water needed urgently for apple orchards in the Karewa region, spanning hundreds of kanals of land.
They pointed out that a pumping station established in 1984 along the Jhelum River in Larkipora, intended to supply water to Koil and nearby villages, is now inadequate. Despite appeals, issues such as silt deposition and machinery faults persist at the pumping station.
Farmers have criticized occupation authorities for failing to address these persistent problems.
They are urging authorities to take immediate action to ensure a consistent and sufficient water supply, crucial for safeguarding their agricultural livelihoods amid ongoing challenges. However, despite their appeals, the concerned authorities have not taken any action, thereby exacerbating the plight of the farming community in the district.
