US expresses unease over Modi’s Russia visit

New Delhi: Just days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia, the United States has voiced concern, emphasizing that bilateral relations are “not yet deep enough” to be taken for granted, particularly during global conflicts.

According to Kashmir Media Service, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, speaking at a conclave on India-US defence relations, indirectly referenced Modi’s Moscow trip, highlighting that the outcomes were less substantive than expected. He underscored the importance of robust bilateral ties but cautioned against complacency, stressing that the relationship must not be overlooked or underestimated.

“In Washington today, where bipartisan consensus is rare, there is a unified understanding that while our relationship with India is strong and expanding, it remains insufficiently deep,” Garcetti remarked.

Addressing concerns over India’s stance on international issues, particularly civil rights and geopolitical alignments, Garcetti acknowledged American doubts. He emphasized the need for aligned actions alongside diplomatic rhetoric, especially in times of global crises.

India’s decision not to openly criticize Russia’s actions in Ukraine has drawn scrutiny from Western nations advocating a unified response against Moscow. Following his discussions with Putin on Tuesday, Modi’s public remarks did not explicitly mention the missile attack on a children’s hospital in Kyiv, but he did express loss of children’s lives in conflict situations was especially painful.

The US ambassador said that words had to be met with deeds. “…we must not just stand for peace, we must take concrete actions to make sure those who don’t play by peaceful rules, that their war machines cannot continue unabated”.

As tensions persist globally, Garcetti urged India to consider strategic partnerships that prioritize shared values and security interests.
