Kerala assembly unanimously passes resolution against Modi govt’s simultaneous election plan
Trivandrum: The Kerala Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution opposing the BJP-led Indian government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Parliamentary Affairs Minister MB Rajesh presented the resolution, as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was absent due to health reasons. The resolution, which was passed unanimously, termed the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal as “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional”. It demanded the Modi government to urgently withdraw its ‘one nation, one election’ plan describing it at odds with the country’s federal structure.
Minister Rajesh while presenting the resolution said if such an attempt becomes a reality it will weaken the federal structure of India and compromise the country’s diverse parliamentary democracy. He this is nothing but an attempt to centralise power, which is the agenda of the RSS and BJP.
The Opposition benches also did not doubt that this is impractical for Indian democracy.
The CPI, the second largest party in the ruling CPI-M government in Kerala, has also taken a strong position with its leaders saying this was a ploy by the Sangh Parivar forces to impose homogeneity in all spheres of life. “After one tax, one language, one culture, one religion, they are trying to move in the direction of one election, one party, and one leader,” they said.
Apart from Kerala, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Tamil Nadu counterpart MK Stalin, both members of the INDIA bloc, have voiced their concerns against the ‘One Nation One Election’ proposal. Banerjee slammed it calling it a “design to subvert the basic structure of the Constitution” and Stalin called it an “impractical idea”.
There are about 15 parties opposing the implementation of One Nation, One Election, which include many from the INDIA bloc including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Samajwadi Party along with many other regional parties.
