Supporters of climate activist Wangchuk detained in Delhi

Kargil leader condemns crackdown, demands Ladakh rights

New Delhi: The Delhi Police detained members of the All-India Students Association (AISA) as they protested outside Ladakh Bhawan in support of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangchuk is currently seeking a meeting with top leadership to discuss demands for Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, among other concerns.

On October 5, Wangchuk began an indefinite fast to draw attention to the region’s calls for statehood and constitutional safeguards to protect Ladakh’s land and cultural identity. His advocacy has garnered support from both the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).

In a related development, prominent activist and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) leader, Sajjad Kargili in a press conference condemned the crackdown on peaceful protestors. He criticized the ongoing suppression of voices demanding justice and political rights for the region, asserting that “all is not well in Ladakh.”

Kargili emphasized that since unilateral bifurcation from occupied Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, Ladakh has been deprived of its fundamental political rights.

Rejecting the idea of continuing as a Union Territory, Kargili asserted that the people of Ladakh should have control over their own administration. He described the imposition of UT status as a failure to address the region’s problems and warned that the Modi government must recognize the people’s rejection of the current setup.

Kargili characterized the crackdown on protestors as a grave injustice and reiterated that the people of Ladakh would continue to peacefully resist until their demands for political empowerment are met.
