Serving Indian Army colonel, son assaulted by police over parking dispute in Punjab

Chandigarh: A serving Indian Army colonel and his son were allegedly brutally thrashed by police in Patiala, Punjab, over a parking dispute. The officer sustained a fractured arm, and his son suffered head injuries.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the victim, Colonel Pushpinder Bath, currently posted at the Indian Army Headquarters in New Delhi, was attacked last week outside a roadside eatery near Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. CCTV footage from the area captured the incident.

At a press conference in Patiala, Colonel Bath’s wife, Jaswinder Bath, said that the family was eating outside their car when police officers asked her husband to move his vehicle to make space for theirs. “When my husband objected to their language, one of them punched him. Then, all the police personnel began assaulting my husband and son,” she said. She further claimed that they were beaten with baseball bats and sharp-edged weapons, causing the colonel’s broken arm and a long head wound to her son. Both were hospitalized and are currently receiving treatment.

However, one of the accused policemen claimed the altercation was initiated by the colonel and his son, alleging they were intoxicated and attacked the officers.

The Punjab Police has suspended 12 officials, including three inspectors, and ordered a departmental probe into the matter. Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nanak Singh said, “We will conduct a thorough investigation, and justice will be served. No one will be spared”.
