‘World failed to stop crimes against humanity in Gaza and IIOJK’

United Nations: Pakistan has said that the international community has failed to prevent the ongoing crimes against humanity being committed in Gaza and Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to Kashmir Media Service, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Usman Jadoon, while speaking during a debate at the UN General Assembly on Responsibility to Protect (R2P), said that the situations in Gaza, IIOJK, and several other conflict zones highlight the urgent need for a credible, principled, and impartial approach to protect the world’s most vulnerable populations.

He said that the principle of R2P, once projected as a global commitment to prevent atrocities including genocide, has been rendered meaningless due to selective application, double standards, and politicization. He reminded the Assembly that the R2P concept, endorsed in 2005, places the responsibility on every state to protect its population, while also mandating international support when states are unable or unwilling to do so.

Usman Jadoon stressed that the so-called responsibility to protect, once presented as a moral obligation of the international community, has now been largely abandoned. Gaza, he said, is a glaring example of this moral bankruptcy.

He pointed out that Israel’s brutal military campaign in Gaza has resulted in the killing of more than 55,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children, and the wounding of over 100,000 people. On the other hand, in IIOJK, nearly 900,000 Indian troops have carried out a decades-long campaign of state terrorism, involving extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and systematic discrimination.

He added that the rise of the hate-driven Hindutva ideology has deepened the crisis, exposing Muslims and other minorities to the threat of massacres, lynchings, and open calls for genocide. He said that credible international human rights organizations have issued multiple warnings about the situation, but these have been ignored, allowing the atrocities to continue unchecked.

Usman Jadoon also highlighted India’s unprovoked aggression on 6 and 7 May, targeting civilian areas inside Pakistan, which resulted in the martyrdom of 35 civilians, including 15 children. In response, Pakistan exercised maximum restraint and limited its actions to verified military targets only.

He concluded by stating that the international community has consistently failed to address the root causes of conflicts. If the R2P doctrine is to retain any credibility, it must be implemented as a genuine commitment to human dignity and protection, without discrimination or political bias.
