India’s snub to Ladakh statehood sparks fears of fresh protests

Leh: The Modi-led Indian regime has signaled its reluctance to grant statehood or Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh, raising fears of a new wave of protests across the region, according to Cherring Dorjay Lakruk, co-chairman of the Leh Apex Body (LAB).

According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking after a “High-Powered Committee” meeting convened by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi, Lakruk described the talks as “inconclusive” and warned that the Modi government appears disinclined to accept the principal demands of the Ladakhi people.

The Modi administration’s stance comes despite repeated calls by local leaders for greater political rights and safeguards, highlighting New Delhi’s continued obduracy in addressing the region’s political aspirations.

Analysts say the decision is likely to trigger widespread demonstrations in India’s illegally occupied territory.

Residents and civil society leaders in Ladakh have expressed anger and frustration, warning that continued denial of statehood could exacerbate existing tensions and lead to organized protests demanding political rights. KMS-11K
