Kashmir glaciers shrink by 30% in 60 years, warn scientists
Srinagar: Scientists have warned that glaciers feeding the Upper Indus Basin have shrunk by over 30 percent in the last six decades, with the retreat accelerating due to rising temperatures.
According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing a climate conference at Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora, Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo said more glacier mass is predicted to disappear by the end of the 21st century.
Experts said the changes will severely impact drinking water, irrigation and hydropower in Kashmir and Jammu, stressing the need for immediate adaptation measures.
