NIA attaches property of activist in Srinagar

Srinagar: India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has attached a residential property of an activist in Srinagar district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The NIA attached the property of activist Ghulam Mohammad Mir alias Mama Gas in Hazratbal area.
An NIA handout said the property was attached under the draconian UAPA. It said prior approval was obtained from the agency’s Director General.
The NIA claimed the property was linked to an alleged conspiracy. It alleged the property was connected with pro-freedom activities.
The agency further alleged that Mir had provided shelter to pro-liberation members at his residence.
Rights advocates and critics argue such attachments are sweeping. They say black laws like UAPA are misused. In many cases, families are also affected. They call it collective punishment without due process.
Observers see this as part of New Delhi’s broader strategy. They say the aim is to economically weaken Kashmiris and suppress their aspirations.
Critics say confiscations under draconian laws have increased. This escalation followed the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A in August 2019.
Experts in Srinagar described the actions as a settler-colonial project. They said the aim is to alter demographics. Local Kashmiris are being displaced to facilitate settlement of non-locals.
Properties of pro-freedom leaders have been targeted. These include the late Syed Ali Gilani, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Aasiya Andrabi, and Jamaat-e-Islami. Even the APHC headquarters and educational institutions have been confiscated. Many houses, shops, and complexes have also been demolished.
Experts say these measures aim to intimidate Kashmiris. The goal is to make them give up their birthright and political future. They warn such actions are deepening economic distress and fueling resentment.
Observers say this is an attempt to economically cripple Kashmiris and force them into submission. “Destroying homes and confiscating properties will not subdue Kashmiris’ resolve for freedom,” analysts said. They urged the international community to take notice.
Despite repressive tactics, Kashmiris remain steadfast. They continue to demand self-determination through a free and impartial plebiscite.
