Speakers deplore UN failure to implement its resolutions on Kashmir

Islamabad: Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR) and United Kashmir Journalists Association jointly organized a seminar/webinar titled “Kashmiris’ Right to self-determination and responsibility of United Nations” in Islamabad, today.

According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing the seminar/webinar, the speakers highlighted in detail the resolution passed by the UN Commission for Indian and Pakistan on January 5, 1949, in which the Kashmiri people have been given the right to decide their political future through a free and impartial referendum.

The speakers said that over seven decades had passed since this resolution was passed. They deplored that the UN could neither implement this and resolutions of the World Body nor could force India to fulfill its promises made to the Kashmiri people. They said on August 5, 2019, the fascist Modi government of India repealed the special status of occupied Jammu and Kashmir and now wants to resettle the Indian Hindus there to change the demographic composition of the territory.

The speakers said that the Kashmir dispute remained unresolved despite being on the UN agenda for the last several decades. They urged the World Body to take steps for resolving this lingering dispute by giving the Kashmiris their right to self-determination for ensuring permanent peace in South Asia.

The speakers included PML-N Azad Kashmir President Shah Ghulam Qadir, All Parties Hurriyat Conference AJK leaders Ghulam Muhammad Safi and Advocate Parvez Shah, noted foreign journalist Robert Fitina, Dr Farah Naz, Nazish Altaf, Dr Ashraf Wani and President of UKJA Abdul Latif Dar. Altaf Hussain Wani, head of KIIR, moderated the seminar.

A large number of young scholars studying in different universities of Islamabad participated in the seminar, while a rich question and answer session was also held at the end.
