Muzaffarabad event remembers Kunanposhpora mass rape tragedy


Muzaffarabad: A solemn event commemorating the 1991 Kunanposhpora mass rape tragedy was held in Muzaffarabad city of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, today. It was on the night of 23 February in 1991 that the Indian army officers and troops had entered the houses under the guise of searches in Kunanposhpora village in Kupwara district of occupied Jammu and Kashmir and gang-raped around 100 women.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the event was organized by the Institute of Multi Track Dialogue Development and Diplomatic Studies at Moon Hall in Muzaffarabad city.
Distinguished panelists including Madam Nousheen, Vice Principal of Moon Creation; Syed Abdul Samad Advocate, Founder Director of Expert Law Associates; Madam Amal Atta Advocate, Vice Chairman of Naqvi Law Associates; and Dr. Sheikh Waleed Rasool attended the event.

The speakers shed light on the horrific incident and discussed the responsibilities of Kashmiris particularly with regard to the women’s empowerment. They also highlighted the role of Kashmiri women in the ongoing movement for right to self-determination. With poignant descriptions and passionate appeals, the panelists emphasized the enduring impact of Kunan Poshpora incident.

Dr.Waleed Rasool, who virtually joined the event, provided a comprehensive overview of the Kunan Poshpora mass rape incident, detailing its occurrence, timeline, and location and offering crucial insights into the historical context surrounding the tragedy.

Ahsan Ulhaq, a student from Post Graduate College, Muzaffarabad, expressed gratitude for the enlightening discussions, emphasizing the significance of unity and perseverance in the pursuit of justice and equality for all the Kashmiris.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to honor the memory of the victims of Kunanposhpora and to work tirelessly towards a peaceful and prosperous future for the Kashmiri people.
