Justin Trudeau acknowledges security concerns of Sikh community

Canadian PM addresses Khalsa Day in Toronto amid Pro-Khalistan Chants

Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marked Khalsa Day in Toronto amidst loud pro-Khalistan slogans from the crowd.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in his address, Trudeau assured the Sikh community of their rights and freedoms, emphasizing that Sikh values are integral to Canadian values.

Trudeau highlighted Canada’s strength in diversity, stating, “We are strong not in spite of our differences, but because of our differences.” He pledged to protect the rights and freedoms of Sikh Canadians and defend the community against hatred and discrimination.

Acknowledging the security concerns of the Sikh community, Trudeau announced plans to enhance security at community centers and places of worship, including gurdwaras. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the fundamental right to practice religion freely, as guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Despite Trudeau’s assurances, pro-Khalistan chants were heard in the background during his speech.

The Khalsa Day celebrations in downtown Toronto attracted thousands of people, commemorating the founding of the Sikh community in 1699 and the Sikh New Year. Organized by the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwaras Council (OSGC), the annual parade down Lake Shore Boulevard is one of the nation’s largest, drawing spectators from across Canada.

Trudeau’s remarks come amid strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada, underscoring the complexities of navigating cultural and political sensitivities on the international stage.

Over the past year, Canada has found itself in a strained relationship with India. Ottawa has accused India of the killing of a prominent Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was shot and killed in Surrey, B.C., on June 18, 2023.
