Indian SC questions ED on timing of Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest ahead of polls
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has questioned the country’s probe agency, the Enforcement Directorate, on the timing of Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest, right before the parliamentary elections.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 for his alleged role in the liquor policy case, stirring controversy and raising eyebrows across political circles. He is currently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. The AAP has held that this case was an attempt by the Modi government to use the probe agencies and stop the party – and the Delhi government – from functioning.
The Indian top court was hearing Kejriwal’s petition against his arrest.
“Life and liberty are exceedingly important,” a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta said, today, adding, “You can’t deny that.”
“No attachment action has been taken so far in this case, and if it has been done, then show how Kejriwal is involved in the matter,” Justice Khanna said. “Tell me, why the arrest before the general elections?” Justice Sanjiv Khanna said.
The ED has been asked to present its stand in the next hearing, which is likely to take place on Friday. KMS-27S
