Rahul Gandhi summoned to appear in Ranchi court over remarks against Amit Shah

Ranchi: A court in Ranchi in Jharkand state has issued summons to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to physically appear before it in the case of making remarks against Indian Home Minister Amit Shah. Gandhi had made the statement at an event in 2018.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the next hearing of this case is scheduled to be held on June 11, in which Rahul Gandhi has been asked to appear.

BJP leader Naveen Jha had filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi in the Ranchi court. He has alleged that Rahul Gandhi had made objectionable remarks against the party’s then national president Amit Shah during an event in 2018.

In his 2018 statement, Rahul Gandhi had said that the BJP is a party that can make “a murderer the national president”.

Jha filed a petition objecting that Rahul Gandhi had made false statements against his leader and his party. After the petitioner’s complaint, the Ranchi MP/MLA court [courts dealing with offences against former MPs and MLAs] had issued summons to Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi had gone to the Jharkhand High Court after the summons was issued, but the High Court refused to give him any relief.

After the High Court rejected his plea, a hearing was held again in the MP/MLA Court of Ranchi, today, in which the judge asked Rahul Gandhi to appear in the court on June 11.

It is worth mentioning here that Rahul Gandhi’s parliament membership was suspended in 2019 after a court in Gujarat convicted him for making defamatory comments against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, Rahul Gandhi’s defamation conviction was later suspended by the Indian Supreme Court.
