Srinagar: People from all walks of life, including religious scholars, civil society members, and political activists, have strongly condemned the Modi government’s Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, calling it a direct interference in the religious affairs of Muslims in India and occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the bill has been widely criticized as a new legal weapon meant to undermine Muslim autonomy, a discriminatory law targeting Muslim autonomy and faith, and a veiled attempt to strangle Muslim religious freedom. It has also been described as a political tactic to dismantle Muslim institutions and silence religious voices.

Critics argue that the bill is Modi’s latest effort to subvert Muslim religious rights and cultural integrity, a tool for religious suppression, and an institutional weakening of Muslims. It has been termed as a blueprint for controlling and marginalizing Muslim religious bodies, aiming to weaken Muslim autonomy and disempower Muslims.

Senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq warned that changes to Waqf laws will disempower Muslims all over India, particularly in IIOJK. The bill has been seen as a legislative assault on the heart of Muslim autonomy, eroding Muslim autonomy with a single stroke.
