Assam BJP govt ends Friday prayer break in state assembly
Guwahati: The Hindutva BJP government in the India’s Assam has ended the tradition of a Friday prayer break in the state assembly.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the assembly previously provided a break from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM every Friday to accommodate Muslim members wishing to perform Friday prayers. This practice, established during the British colonial period, will no longer be observed.
Additionally, the BJP government in Assam recently introduced new legislation requiring the compulsory registration of Muslim marriages and divorces. This new law replaces the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935. Under the updated regulations, marriage registrations will be handled by a government sub-registrar rather than qazis (Islamic judges), and marriages involving individuals under eighteen will no longer be registered.
