Manipur govt urges Modi regime to withdraw AFSPA

Imphal: The government of violence-hit Manipur has urged the Modi regime to review and withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from areas under the jurisdiction of six police stations in the state.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a letter to the Modi regime, the Manipur government recommended the withdrawal of AFSPA from regions designated as disturbed areas under Section 3 of the AFSPA 1958.

The Joint Secretary (Home) stated that the state cabinet deliberated on the re-imposition of AFSPA in its meeting held on November 15 and decided to recommend to the central government to review and withdraw the said declaration.

The letter further said, “It is accordingly requested to review and withdraw the notification dated 14-11-2024 in the public interest.”

It is important to note that on November 14 the Ministry of Home Affairs had re-imposed AFSPA in areas falling under Sekmai police station, Lamsang police station, Lamlai, Moirang, Leimakhong, and Jiribam of Manipur.

Meanwhile, a violent mob ransacked the residences of three ministers and six MLAs in Manipur, setting several properties on fire as tensions flared across the state. In a separate incident, miscreants also set fire to at least two churches and three houses in violence-hit Jiribam town.

Manipur authorities have imposed an indefinite curfew in five districts and suspended internet services in seven districts for two days.
