DFP demands release of Kashmiri prisoners, slams house detention of Mirwaiz
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) has voiced serious concern over the prolonged detention of senior APHC leader and party chairman Shabir Ahmed Shah and other Hurriyat leaders, calling for the intervention of global human rights organizations to secure the release of Kashmiri prisoners held in various jails of India and Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a statement issued in Srinagar, DFP spokesperson Advocate Arshad Iqbal highlighted the dire conditions faced by hundreds of Kashmiri detainees in prisons outside Kashmir.
“These prisoners are suffering due to unfavorable conditions, lack of clean water, hygienic food, and medical care. Many have developed severe ailments because of limited access to basic necessities,” he stated, adding that their health is deteriorating without adequate medical attention.
Iqbal noted the psychological toll on detainees, with cases of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder exacerbated by isolation in prisons far from their homes.
The DFP urged international human rights organizations to visit facilities like Tihar Jail and other prisons to assess the conditions of Kashmiri detainees. “It is imperative for rights bodies to take effective notice of this humanitarian crisis,” Iqbal said.
The party also condemned the continued house detention of veteran Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, calling it a blatant violation of basic human rights.
Accusing the Indian government of using arbitrary arrests and prolonged detentions to suppress the political aspirations of Kashmiris, the spokesperson emphasized the urgent need for a resolution to the Kashmir dispute. “This unresolved issue is both a cause and consequence of human rights violations in the region,” he remarked.
The DFP reiterated its demand for the early release of all Kashmiri prisoners and an end to the ongoing rights abuses in the region.
