Dalit man self-immolates outside Indian Parliament, cites years of injustice
New Delhi: Jitendra Kumar, a 26-year-old Dalit man from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, committed suicide by setting himself on fire outside Rail Bhawan near Indian Parliament in New Delhi against years of injustice.
According to Kashmir Media Service, his act was fueled by years of harassment and intimidation by upper-caste individuals, including a local home guard.
Jitendra’s father, Mahipal Kumar, recounted their ordeal, which began in 2021 when he opposed illegal alcohol sales in their village. This led to a campaign of intimidation against the family, including false cases, physical assaults, and police inaction. Despite approaching authorities, including the SC/ST commission, Jitendra’s pleas for justice were ignored.
The harassment escalated in 2024 when Mahipal survived an intentional car hit, and Jitendra’s sister-in-law suffered a miscarriage due to an assault.
Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya has promised an investigation into Jitendra’s extreme step. Local BJP MP Raj Kumar Sangwan assured the family of unbiased inquiry and action.
Jitendra’s tragic death highlights the deep-seated caste prejudices in India and underscores the urgent need for systemic reform to protect marginalized communities from discrimination and violence.
