TMC leader demands accountability from Modi govt on Christian persecution, minority rights
New Delhi: Trinamool Congress leader and Indian parliament member Derek O’Brien has criticized the Narendra Modi government for its treatment of Christians and minorities, calling for urgent accountability and action.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a strongly worded blog post, O’Brien highlighted the targeting of Christian institutions, rising violence against minorities, and the Modi government’s neglect of Manipur. His remarks come just days after Prime Minister Modi attended a Christmas event organized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in Delhi—an appearance O’Brien dismissed as a hollow gesture failing to address the community’s pressing concerns.
The TMC leader said that the Modi government was weaponizing the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) to suppress Christian-run institutions and questioned its silence on hate speeches and communal slurs. He further criticized divisive policies, including the Waqf Bill and actions targeting minorities in Kerala.
“Why are attacks on Christian institutions increasing? Why does the government remain silent on hate crimes and communal rhetoric?” O’Brien questioned, calling for urgent answers.
Highlighting the plight of Manipur, O’Brien said that the Modi government was failing to address the state’s suffering, describing its actions as indifferent and harmful.
“Many Christmases have passed; it’s time to demand accountability from the Prime Minister,” he asserted.
Reflecting on his two decades in public life, O’Brien wrote, “In all my years in Parliament, I have never written about the church in India—until now. To remain silent any longer would be complicity.”
The TMC leader’s blog is a sharp indictment of the Modi government’s approach to minority rights and governance, reigniting debate on these pressing issues.
