Escalating tension with China, India brings more troops to LAC
New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions with China following its decision to carve two counties out of the Ladakh region and construct a massive dam on the Brahmaputra River, India has advanced 33 Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) posts closer to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and deployed six new battalions to bolster its defenses.
According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking at the ITBP’s 63rd Raising Day ceremony in Odisha’s Khordha district, Director General Rahul Rasgotra detailed the “forwardisation plan” aimed at bolstering the force’s presence along the icy front. Six battalions have been deployed in Arunachal Pradesh, with one stationed along the Sikkim border.
Rasgotra highlighted efforts to modernize the force, including upgrading surveillance technology, leveraging the national fibre network for secure communications, and proposing advanced weaponry to the Indian home ministry.
Funds totaling INR 2,500 crore have been allocated this year to improve infrastructure at the LAC, following INR 1,000 crore spent last year on construction at forward posts and battalion facilities.
The ITBP, raised after the 1962 India-China war , remains the primary guardian of the 3,488-km-long LAC with China, while also undertaking internal security duties. Indian Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai attended the event as the chief guest.
