70% prisoners in Indian jails are undertrials, parliamentary panel confirms

New Delhi: An Indian parliamentary panel has confirmed that 70 per cent of the prisoners, many from Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, in jails are undertrials and they are not being released from the prisons for want of sureties or inability to pay fine amounts.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the report of the Indian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs also found that surveillance technology should be used at every entry point in the prisons to detect drugs.

“The prison administrations are spending a lot more money on keeping such prisoners inside jails than the bail money required for their release,” the report, submitted to Rajya Sabha, said.
