Complaint filed in rights commission over civilian killings in Kathua, Baramulla

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a complaint has been filed in the Human Rights Commission, though a toothless body after revocation of Article 370, seeking intervention in the deaths of two civilians by Indian troops in Kathua and Baramulla districts.

According to Kashmi Media Service, the complaint has been filed by Advocate Nikhil Padha, founder of the Organization for Human Rights & Harmony (OHRH).

The complaint states that 25-year-old Makhan Din from Kathua and 32-year-old Waseem Ahmad Mir from Sopore, Baramulla, lost their lives at the hands of Indian forces’ personnel extrajudicially, raising serious concerns about human rights violations in the occupied territory.

“These incidents are a blatant violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Padha stated, demanding “a transparent and independent investigation into both cases to ensure justice is served and accountability is upheld.”

The complaint calls on the commission to take immediate cognizance and issue directives, including “a judicial probe by a sitting or retired High Court judge,” the “suspension of accused personnel during the investigation to prevent evidence tampering,” and the “establishment of an independent oversight committee to monitor [occupation] forces’ conduct in [occupied] Jammu and Kashmir.”

The OHRH has stressed the need for accountability and justice for the victim families.
