In UNHRC address, Parvez Shah draws attention to worsening rights violations in IIOJK

Geneva: Advocate Parvez Shah, Secretary General of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference-AJK chapter has drawn the United Nations Human Rights Council’s attention to the rapidly deteriorating human rights situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, while participating in the general debate on agenda item 3 during the 58th Session of the Council in Geneva, Advocate Parvez Shah said that this situation in the occupied territory is characterized by severe restrictions on fundamental freedoms, arbitrary detentions and widespread human rights abuses. He also highlighted the plight of numerous political activists and human rights defenders who are detained under draconian laws such as AFSPA and PSA.

“We urge the Council to take notice of the High Commissioner’s concerns regarding the use of restrictive laws and the harassment of human rights defenders and independent journalists in Kashmir,” he said.

Advocate Parvez Shah emphasized the importance of “promoting and protecting human rights, including the fundamental right to self-determination, in accordance with international law.” He also underscored the need for a meaningful dialogue among all stakeholders to address the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
